When Dan and I were traveling with my mom around Spain, we went to a Roman archaeological site outside of Seville called Italica. The excavated sites had the most amazing mosaics. One of the excavated sites was called the “House of the Birds”, because all of the mosaics had a bird motif.

I’ve sat and stared at Roman mosaics for hours at museums in Britain, France, Spain and Italy — and that got me to thinking… Why not have a mosaic or two at my own house? The fireplace surround, cooktop backsplash, bathrooms and the arch to the guest suite are good spots for mosaics.

I found a mosaic company called New Ravenna, run by a designer named Sarah Baldwin. Gorgeous stuff. Here are links to favorite designs and ideas:
